Crystaline Sports Center – China

To mark the occasion of the World University Games, German studio GMP Architekten has built the stunning Universiade Sports Center in Shenzhen, China. The games are for students and are held every other year in winter and summer. The design for the sports center was inspired by the undulating landscape that surrounds it and it generates a formal dialog that references Chinese horticulture and philosophy toward the land. The structure’s roofs is a steel prismatic shell with stunning triangular facets. The crystalline shape of the three stadiums is enhanced by the illumination of the translucent facades at night. An artificial lake connects the stadium with the circular multifunctional hall in the north and the rectangular swimming hall in the west.
